A house for downsizers but the brief still had a substantial accommodation requirement. A significant challenge considering the small (341m2) sloping site with a myriad of council planning restrictions. The house also had to be designed around a substantial gum tree which is a local landmark.
The design solution involved a basement level which freed up the ground floor to be open plan living focused around a north facing outdoor living area and the aforementioned tree. Upper floors are bedrooms and all levels are serviced by a lift to allow aging in place.
A pitched roof and open carport is required under council planning requirements. When treated with sculptural finesse, these elements become the dominating 3 dimensional forms that are supported by contrasting timber and stone elements.
