Riverton Drive, Shelley 2020

An interesting sloping long narrow site (10mx60m) with an adjoining existing dwelling to the north and river views to the west. The passive solar design revolves around the pragmatic requirements of maximizing the river views and maintaining northern light. A large upper floor balcony faces the river which the main living spaces are oriented towards, however, the plan also opens out the eastern garden so the main living areas are transparent at both ends.

External blinds control western sun whilst highlight windows positioned over the boundary parapet wall will flood the living spaces with quality northern light. Raised garden beds on the balcony provide privacy screening and soften the external space. Material selection are dominated by the client’s requirement for a ‘resort feel’ and consist of timber lining, stone and rendered brickwork.
